Most people are chronically dehydrated not because they don't drink enough — but because the water they're drinking can't properly enter their cells. Hydration isn't about volume. It's about what's dissolved in it, and whether the body can actually use it.

◈The Science
Why Cells Need More Than Water
Water enters cells through aquaporin channels — protein gateways embedded in the cell membrane. For this process to work efficiently, the water needs to carry dissolved minerals: primarily sodium, magnesium, potassium, and trace elements. These electrolytes create the osmotic gradient that draws water across the membrane and into the cell where it is actually needed.
When you drink demineralised or very low-mineral water — including much filtered water and all distilled water — that gradient is weak. The water moves through the digestive tract and into urine rather than into the intracellular space. The result: drinking a lot and still feeling depleted, foggy, or low energy. The water is passing through, not in.
Aquaporin Channels — How Water Enters a Cell
Aquaporin Channels (AQP)
Protein gateways that selectively allow water molecules through the cell membrane. Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2003. Without sufficient electrolytes in the water, the osmotic gradient is too weak to drive flow efficiently.
Sodium (Na⁺) and the Gradient
Sodium creates the primary osmotic gradient. A small amount of quality mineral salt in water provides this signal — allowing water to move across the membrane rather than pass straight through.
The Result of Proper Hydration
75% of the body is intracellular water. When cells are genuinely hydrated, mitochondria function better, neural signalling is faster, and detoxification pathways run more efficiently.

◈What's In the Glass
The Case for Filtering
Tap water in most developed cities is technically safe by regulatory standards — meaning it won't cause acute illness. But "safe" and "clean" are different things. What has been found in municipal water supplies across Europe, the US, and beyond goes further than most people realise.
Found in tap water globally
What's Actually in Your Water
Reveal ↓
⬡
Fluoride — the iodine competitor
Added to municipal water in many countries, fluoride is an industrial by-product of aluminium and phosphate fertiliser manufacturing. It competes with iodine at the thyroid receptor — disrupting thyroid function and metabolism. Animal studies demonstrate accumulation in the pineal gland (which governs melatonin production). It is literally used as a root-canal sealant — it kills roots. The science on its systemic effects at population-level exposure is considerably more contested than the official position acknowledges.
⬡
Pharmaceutical residues
Studies across the EU and North America have detected antibiotics, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and anti-inflammatory drugs in treated tap water. These compounds pass through wastewater treatment largely intact. The long-term effect of chronic exposure to multiple pharmaceutical compounds simultaneously — at low concentrations, continuously — has not been studied.
⬡
Synthetic oestrogen from contraceptives
Ethinylestradiol — the synthetic oestrogen in hormonal contraceptives — passes through the body and into the water system, where it resists standard treatment. It has been linked to feminisation in fish populations near wastewater outlets and is under active research for effects on human endocrine function. A standard carbon filter doesn't fully remove it — reverse osmosis is required.
⬡
Microplastics
An Orb Media study found microplastics in 83% of global tap water samples. More recent research has confirmed microplastics in human blood, lung tissue, breast milk, and placental tissue. Particles small enough to cross cell membranes are now a confirmed presence in human biology — the implications are still being understood.
⬡
Chlorine and chloramine
Added to kill pathogens — which they do effectively. They also disrupt the gut microbiome, which is itself a primary pathogen defence system. Chlorine largely evaporates if water sits in an open container for a few hours and is removed by most carbon filters. Chloramine — increasingly used as a longer-lasting alternative — does not evaporate and requires a specific catalytic carbon filter to remove.
⬡
Fecal indicator bacteria and pipe contamination
Water quality reports measure for E. coli as a fecal indicator — but in older pipe infrastructure (much of Europe and the US), contamination between treatment plant and tap is documented. Ageing lead pipes are a particular concern in pre-1970s housing stock across many European cities and are a known source of lead exposure even in cities with otherwise clean treatment systems.
Not all filters are the same. Here is what each type actually removes:

Notes
Carbon block Counter-top · Britta
Chlorine, chloramine, most VOCs, some heavy metals, some pharmaceuticals, improves taste
Fluoride, synthetic oestrogen, nitrates, microplastics, most pharmaceutical residues
Entry level. Good for taste and basic chemical reduction. Insufficient for full spectrum.
Reverse osmosis Under-sink
Fluoride, microplastics, synthetic oestrogens, nitrates, heavy metals, most pharmaceuticals, bacteria, viruses
Some dissolved gases. Removes beneficial minerals too — requires remineralisation.
Most comprehensive. Always add mineral salt back. Best option for full spectrum filtration.
Ceramic + carbon Gravity filter
Bacteria, protozoa, chlorine, some heavy metals, particulates
Mid-range. Good for removing biological contamination and basic chemicals.
Distilled water Not recommended alone
Almost everything — including minerals
Removes everything beneficial. Biologically inert without remineralisation.
Always remineralise. Can actually leach minerals from the body when consumed plain.

◈What to Add Back
Mineralising Your Water — The Right Salts
Once water is filtered, it needs mineralising. A small pinch of a quality mineral-rich salt per litre is all that's needed — not for flavour, but for electrolyte content and the osmotic gradient it creates.
First Choice
Celtic Sea Salt
Harvested by traditional methods from Atlantic coastal salt marshes, Celtic salt retains its full mineral profile including magnesium, calcium, and over 80 trace elements. Grey in colour due to mineral content — the grey is the point, not a quality issue. A small pinch per litre is sufficient. Widely available.

First Choice
Baja Gold
Sourced from the Sea of Cortez, Baja Gold contains 90+ minerals including the full electrolyte spectrum. Among the most mineral-dense salts available. Also available as a liquid trace mineral supplement for those who prefer not to salt their water directly.
✓ Recommended
A Note on Himalayan Pink Salt
Himalayan salt has been widely recommended in wellness circles, and while it does contain trace minerals, multiple independent laboratory analyses — including tests published by the Clean Label Project — have found elevated levels of heavy metals including arsenic, lead, and cadmium in a significant proportion of samples. Given that Celtic and Baja Gold offer equivalent mineral benefit without this concern, they are the more straightforward choice.

◈The Fourth Phase
Structured Water — What Cells Actually Prefer
Beyond filtering and mineralising, there is a third layer of water quality that research is beginning to document. Gerald Pollack, a professor of bioengineering at the University of Washington, has described a fourth phase of water — beyond solid, liquid, and gas — that forms naturally near hydrophilic surfaces, including cell membranes. This structured or "exclusion zone" (EZ) water has different electrical properties and appears to be the form cells absorb most readily.
EZ Water — The Practical Implications
How to Create More of It
Exposure to infrared light (including sunlight and red light therapy), cold temperatures, and certain minerals has been shown in Pollack's research to increase EZ water formation in the body. This is one of the proposed mechanisms behind why grounding, sun exposure, and spring water feel physiologically different — not woo, a measurable electrical phenomenon at the cellular boundary.
Spring water sourced from deep aquifers has naturally higher EZ character. Red light therapy taken after drinking mineralised water may enhance cellular uptake. Drinking water stored in glass rather than plastic preserves its electrical structure. These are refinements rather than essentials — but they are the direction the research points.

Consciousness & Water
Water Responds to Its Environment
Two independent researchers — working decades apart, with different methodologies — arrived at a similar and unsettling observation: water responds to the environment it is held in. Not metaphorically. Structurally. The crystals it forms when frozen reflect the quality of what it has been exposed to — words, music, emotion, intention.
Dr. Masaru Emoto
Messages from Water · Japan · 1990s–2000s
Emoto's team exposed water samples to different words, music, and environments before flash-freezing them and photographing the crystals formed. Water exposed to words like "love" and "gratitude" — in Japanese, English, and other languages — formed geometrically beautiful, coherent snowflake structures. Water exposed to heavy metal music, aggressive words, or polluted sources formed distorted, fragmented, or chaotic patterns. His work spans four volumes and hundreds of photographed samples.
Veda Austin
Water Consciousness Research · New Zealand · 2010s–present
Austin extended Emoto's work using a different method — photographing water in a shallow dish as it transitions from liquid to ice, capturing the moment of crystallisation rather than the frozen result. She documented consistent, reproducible image formations that appear to reflect the intention, imagery, or words placed beneath the dish. Her work adds a real-time visual dimension to the observation that water holds and reflects informational input.
Emoto's photographs showed a consistent pattern across hundreds of samples and multiple languages:
Love / Ai / Liebe / Amour
Love
Highly geometric, complete six-fold symmetry, fine branch detail, brilliant clarity. Among the most consistent results across all languages tested.
Gratitude / Kansha
Gratitude
Emoto described this as his most beautiful result — an inner and outer hexagon in perfect proportion, with fine radiating detail. Often produced in combination with "love."
Negative words · Pollution · Aggression
Chaos
Distorted, fragmented, asymmetric structures with no coherent pattern. Produced consistently by negative words, heavy metal music, or heavily polluted water sources.
The Practical Question
"If water holds the imprint of its environment — the words spoken over it, the music it has been near, the intention of the hands that held it — then how we relate to the water we drink is not entirely a sentimental question. It may be a structural one."
This body of work remains outside mainstream scientific acceptance — the methodology has been criticised for lack of blinding and reproducibility controls. But it has also never been definitively refuted, and Veda Austin's independent replications add a second data set worth knowing about. Hold it lightly, with open curiosity. The takeaway that seems reasonable regardless of position: the quality of the environment your water is held in — glass vs plastic, stillness vs electromagnetic noise, gratitude vs indifference — is worth considering.

◈Molecular Hydrogen
H₂ Water — The Selective Antioxidant
Molecular hydrogen (H₂) dissolved in water is one of the most studied therapeutic agents of the past decade — with over 1,000 published studies across conditions from metabolic syndrome to neurological disease. The mechanism that makes it uniquely interesting is selectivity.
Why Molecular Hydrogen Is Different
Hydrogen is the smallest molecule in existence — small enough to cross every barrier in the body including the blood-brain barrier and mitochondrial membrane. What makes it therapeutically significant is its selectivity.
Most antioxidants neutralise free radicals indiscriminately — including beneficial reactive oxygen species that the body uses for signalling. H₂ specifically neutralises the hydroxyl radical (•OH) — the most destructive and least controllable free radical — while leaving beneficial ROS intact. This makes it uniquely non-disruptive while being powerfully protective.
The Alchemy H2 generator produces water with dissolved molecular hydrogen. Drink within 30 minutes of generation — dissolved H₂ dissipates quickly at room temperature.

◈The Morning Protocol
How to Start the Day Actually Hydrated
The body loses approximately 500ml of water overnight through breath, sweat, and cellular processes. Before coffee, before food, before anything — the system is asking for water. Here is the sequence worth building into the morning.
1
On waking · Before anything else
500ml filtered water + mineral salt
A pinch of Celtic salt or Baja Gold in a large glass of filtered water. Room temperature or slightly warm — cold water first thing requires the body to expend energy warming it before absorption. This addresses overnight dehydration and provides the electrolyte base for the morning cortisol awakening response.
Free · Immediate · Highest leverage
2
Optional · With morning water
Fresh lemon juice
Stimulates bile production and the liver's enzyme cascade — supporting the overnight detoxification process that peaks in early morning. Adds vitamin C and potassium. The alkalising effect post-metabolism is real, though secondary. More practically: it makes the ritual feel intentional, which matters for consistency.
Free · Liver support · Circadian-aligned
3
Optional · When available
Molecular hydrogen water
Drink within 30 minutes of generation. Adds a selective antioxidant layer to the morning hydration practice. The Alchemy H2 generator produces dissolved molecular hydrogen — the smallest molecule in existence, capable of crossing every membrane including the blood-brain barrier. Selectively neutralises the hydroxyl radical while leaving beneficial ROS intact.
Upgraded · Drink within 30 min · Stack with red light
4
Throughout the day
2–3 litres mineralised water continuously
Always with a small amount of mineral content. Glass or stainless containers only — heat in plastic accelerates leaching. The best hydration indicator remains urine colour: pale straw is well-hydrated, dark yellow is behind. Clear can indicate over-hydration and electrolyte dilution — add more salt, not more water.
Daily foundation · Glass containers only
When cells are genuinely hydrated, everything downstream changes — energy, cognition, skin, recovery. Water is the medium that carries almost every biological signal in the body. What's dissolved in it, and whether the body can actually use it, matters enormously.
Most people are not chronically dehydrated. They are chronically under-mineralised — drinking plenty of the wrong kind of water, and wondering why they still feel depleted.
