What to Put on Your Skin Before Red Light Therapy (and What to Skip)

The simplest pre-LED routine starts with a clean face. If you want to use skincare during the session, keep the layers light and follow your device instructions. Here is the routine I use with the NuShape mask.

A thick layer of makeup or cream can get between the LEDs and your skin. I use lightweight skincare formulated to complement my light sessions and keep heavier products for afterward.

Here's what I put on my skin before every session, and what I leave in the cabinet.

Start with clean skin, always

Remove makeup and sunscreen before a facial session, and follow the device's instructions for clean, dry skin. A heavy oil or balm can leave a film and make a close-fitting mask messy.

Cleanse if you have applied skincare or sunscreen since washing. Pat dry.

Step 1: Hydrate and prep

I use a few sprays of Enlumine Treatment Mist, which includes hyaluronic acid, peptides and green tea extract. Let it dry down before fitting the mask. You can also do your session on bare skin if that is what your device directs.

Step 2: Layer a light-friendly serum

I press a thin layer of Ultimate Photon Elixir into my face and neck and let it absorb before the session. Use only products compatible with your device.

An early study of green tea before red LED light reported visible rejuvenation in one month, compared with ten months of light alone. That finding helped inspire the pairing, though the study did not test this finished serum.

Step 3: Light, then seal

Complete your red light session, whether that's an LED mask, a panel or a wrap. Then apply moisturizer. I use Ageless Cream.

What to skip right before a session

Some ingredients are wonderful, just not right before light:

  • Retinoids (retinol, tretinoin). If they irritate your skin, separate them from your LED session and follow your clinician's advice.

  • Strong exfoliating acids (AHAs, BHAs). If they sting or leave you red, use them at another time.

  • Heavy oils and balms. They can leave a film between the mask and skin.

  • Sunscreen and makeup. Take them off first.

If you have a photosensitive condition, take a photosensitizing medication, or have an eye condition, check the device instructions and ask your clinician before treatment. See the Cleveland Clinic overview.

How long to wait between steps

Wait until each layer has absorbed and the mask can sit comfortably. There is no universal 30-second rule.

The routine in one line

Cleanse, let any compatible lightweight skincare absorb, use the mask as directed, then moisturize. For a fuller version, see my LED skincare routine.

FAQ

What should I put on my face before red light therapy?
Start with freshly cleansed skin, then keep it light. A hydrating or antioxidant-rich serum designed to work alongside red light can be applied before your session and allowed to fully absorb. Avoid anything heavy that creates a barrier between your skin and the light.

Can I use retinol with red light therapy?
Yes. Red light and retinoids can both be part of the same skincare routine, but they don’t necessarily need to be used at the same time. If you use a strong retinoid, especially a prescription formula, applying it after your light session or on alternate nights can keep the routine comfortable while still getting the benefits of both.

Should I wear sunscreen during red light therapy?
No. Start your facial red light session with sunscreen removed so the light reaches clean skin directly. Once your session and skincare routine are finished, apply SPF before heading outdoors.

Do I apply moisturizer before or after red light therapy?
Usually after. Lighter serums and light-compatible treatments work well before a session, while moisturizer is ideal afterward to seal in hydration. If a product has been specifically formulated for use with red light, follow its directions — some formulas are intentionally designed to go on before the light.
